UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research Collaboration

This past year, SCPH partnered with the UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) to create meaningful leadership and research projects for underrepresented undergraduates that center equity and community engagement in public health research. This collaboration is part of SCPH’s Education and Engagement Committee, which empowers students to apply anti-racist principles through hands-on initiatives. We also integrated professional development sessions to engage with students on topics of public speaking, interviewing, creating a LinkedIn and more!
In our first cohort, 11 students participated in 4 projects - and we will now hear about their experience!
Diversifying Science Journal Club
hosted by CFAR Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office
Students worked with Dr. Nina Kim to shape and launch an inaugural Journal Club for students & faculty. They created a space for attendees to learn and brainstorm how we can use theories like Critical Race Theory to decolonize research.

Community Partnership in Clinical Research
hosted by CFAR Translational Research Subcore
Students helped move the TRS closer to broader and deeper community engagement in its research consultations and activities through development of a marketing portfolio. They created ideas on how to incorporate community engagement in research beyond just the recruitment phase but study design as well.
Landscape Assessment of Community Advisory Boards (CABs)
hosted by CFAR Substance Use Scientific Working Group
Students conducted a review to create a landscape assessment of existing CABs in UW for people with HIV or who inject drugs and best practices related to fostering strong CAB/research partnerships. Their goal was to uncover how we can use CABs and also give back to them.
How Does Community Engagement Shape Health Research?
Hosted by CFAR Office lof Community Engagement and Admin Core
Students collaborated with Susan Mello and Michael Louella to host an event where Dr. Michele Andrasik talked about how her research in HIV, COVID, and health equity is challenging health disparities worldwide. They coordinated logistics and marketing for the event, as well as moderated.
